Middle Ages/Early Christian
Day 1: Draw it
15 minute sketch of "Madonna and Child."
Day 2: Write it
-Title: "Madonna and Child"
-Artist: Berlinghiero
-C. 1230
-Displayed at The Metropolitan Museum of Art (The Met) in NYC
-What: Byzantium Icon Painting
-Icon Paintings were done on small wooden panels and they were believed to have possessed powers.
- People thought they were so powerful that kissing or touching them would heal them. People began worshiping the paintings themselves instead of what they stood for and so they were banned for being false idols.
-The Madonna is pointing to the Child as the way to salvation.
-Dressed like an ancient philosopher, holding a scroll
-Jesus had otherworldly knowledge so they wanted him to look wise and not like a baby.
- Christianity took over as the main religion in Europe
- The body was seen as corrupt (sinful) instead of beautiful, which is how the Greeks viewed it. Thus Art regressed in knowledge and figures became flat, stiff looking, covered up, and unproportional.
Day 3: Creative Drawing
Draw a picture that could be an Icon Painting for any religion.
Day 4: Creative Writing
1. How are emotions raised by a work of art different from typical human emotions? (For example, is a “sad” painting different from another experience of sadness? If so, how?)
2. Is there a relationship between artistic quality and time? Please describe that relationship. (Time can mean both how long it took to make something and how long ago it was made. - Write about both)
3. Are "Realistic" works of art actually realistic?
