Goya
Day 1: Draw it
15 minute sketch of "The Third of May, 1808"
Day 2: Write it
Artist: Francisco Goya
Painting: "The Third of May, 1808"
Year: 1814
Shows a the Spanish resistance to Napoleon's armies.
Napoleon's Troops invaded Spain so they had better access to the Mediterranean Sea. The people of Madrid rebelled by trying to prevent the French from trying to remove their rulers. The French troops opened fire on the crowd and then the crowd began attacking the troops throughout the city. The French issued a statement that said "The population of Madrid, led astray, has given itself to revolt and murder. French blood has flowed. It demands vengeance. All those arrested in the uprising, arms in hand, will be shot."
The next day the French troops led all of the Spanish citizens out of town and executed them.
The painting is thematically about martyrdom with strong chiaroscuro (a strong contrast between light and dark).
Goya was a court painter (like Velazquez with "Las Meninas"). He was known for commenting on social satire through his artwork. His portrait of Charles IV and his family shows the royal family in a negative light "looking like the corner baker and his wife after they won the lottery" or "a pig in a suit". Eventually Goya went through depression and had an intense fear of insanity - at the age of 75 he moved into a house an painted very depressing paintings on the walls.
Day 3: Creative Drawing
Goya drew a caricature style portrait of the royal family. In a modern context, caricature artists draw people in a specific "street caricature style" Draw someone famous in a cartoon or caricature style.
