Day 2: Write it
-Mother's name: Florence Owens Thompson, she was the subject of Dorothea Lange's photo "Migrant Mother." She was 32 with 7 children. The photo was taken in a 'pea-picker's camp' which was a place where people would go to make money during the depression. They would pick crops for the farmers during the Great Depression.
-This particular camp had 2,500-3,500 people living there. The crops were destroyed due to freezing rain leaving workers and their families without work or pay.
-Dorothea says that she stopped in the camp to take pictures and only asked for Florence's age. Her notes on the image read. "Seven hungry children. Father is a native Californian. Destitute in pea pickers' camp... because of failure of the early pea crop. These people had just sold their tires to buy food."
-Florence's son says "There's no way we sold our tires, because we didn't have any to sell. The only ones we had were on the Hudson (type of car) and we drove off in them. I don't believe Dorothea Lange was lying, I just think she had one story mixed up with another. Or she was borrowing to fill in what she didn't have."
-Florence claims Dorothea said the pictures would never be published but Dorothea sent them to the San Francisco News and to Washington DC. Within days 20,000 pounds of food arrived to the camp to help out the starving families but the Thompsons had moved on.
